White Glass Trinket Dishes With Mixed Green Dots 3′

$22.00

This dish is part of our Serendipity Collection of art glass home decor. It measures 3″ x 3″. In these pictures you can see the glass after it was fused, but before it was “slumped” in a mold to give it its final shape.

Creating it was a 5-step process. First, two squares of glass were cut to the size of the finished dish and stacked, with opaque white glass on top of clear. Green-blue streaky glass pebbles of were arranged on top of the two layers. The pebbles were made in advance by heating small pieces of glass in a kiln to 1475 degrees, the temperature at which glass melts and sharp edges become rounded. Then the two layers of glass and the pebbles went into the kiln and were heated again to 1475 degrees, at which point the white and clear glass fused together and the pebbles melted and sank down, flush with the surface. After cooling the edges were ground to eliminate irregularities. One more firing was required to transform it into a dish. To do this the flat, fused glass square was placed in the kiln on top of a mold and heated to 1250 degrees. At this temperature the glass softened and gravity caused the square to sink into the mold and assume its final shape.

I hope you enjoy this unique art glass trinket dish. It is functional as well as beautiful. Use it to at serve small foods like candy, nuts or condiments, collect loose change, hold votive candles, contain paper clips, display decorative soap … the uses are endless. Both pretty and versatile, it is a perfect gift for anyone who appreciates the quality of hand made things, either by itself or as a set of two or more.
