This Seder Plate is part of our Spirit Collection of art glass home decor. It is Y” diameter.
We hope you enjoy this one-of-a-kind glass piece. It was lovingly hand painted on glass that has a unusual characteristic — the edges shift between green and pink depending on how the light hits them. It is called rhubarb glass because the colors are exactly those of a fresh-cut stalk of rhubarb: pink and light green. It will brighten your Seder table, of become an instant heirloom if you give it as a present.
Creating it was a 4-step process.
Selecting the Glass: Two pieces of rhubarb glass were cut to the size and shape of the finished piece. It seemed appropriate to use something very special for this plate, which will be the centerpiece of many family seder tables to come.
Creating the Image: The paint colors used to decorate the plate are metallic gold and the blue of the Israeli flag. A gold, six-pointed Star of David was painted in the center of the plat. Inside the star, the Hebrew word “Pesach” (Passover in English) was painted in blue. Surrounding the star, the names of the six symbolic foods eaten at a Seder (the traditional Passover meal) were written in Hebrew and English in blue paint. A few other gold embellishments were added to adorn the plate.
Fusing in the Kiln: The two layers of glass were placed in a kiln and heated to 1475 F, the temperature at which the glass melts and the layers fused together.
Shaping the Plate: At this point the piece was still flat. To create the plate’s shape, which includes a depression for each of the six foods, the plate was fired one more time. It was placed on a mold and heated to 1250 degrees (a process known as slumping). At this temperature the glass softens and gravity causes it to sink into the mold and assume its final shape.
