Either way, this is a must-have addition for your home or a foolproof gift for a friend.

“Chopstix” is the name of the dramatic glass used in this piece. Manufactured by Bullseye Glass Co., it is clear glass on which black “stringers” (thin, round rods) are randomly affixed. Then the entire sheet, along with the stringers, is covered with a rainbow iridescent coating. The texture created by the rods has the effect of concentrating the coating, creating vivid colors in unpredictable patterns.

Creating the dish was a 4-step process:
Glass Selection: A square of chopstix glass was cut for the center of the bowl, and strips of iridescent gold glass were cut for the border. In addition, a square piece of clear glass was cut to the size of the finished piece.
Design Assembly: The chopstix glass was placed in the center of the clear glass square, and the borders were fitted around it. The assembly was held in place by with a bit of glue in preparation for transferring it to the kiln.
Fusing in the Kiln: The assembly was placed in a kiln and heated to 1475 degrees, the temperature at which glass melts and the layers fused together.
Shaping the Dish: To create the dish shape, it went back into the kiln one last time on top of a mold. It was heated to 1250 degrees. At this temperature the glass softened and gravity caused it to sink down onto the mold and assume its final shape.
