This is an attention-getting piece that will enhance any home. Display it on the accompanying plate stand and admire the colors that change with the light, or use it to brighten your table as a small serving dish. Either way, this is a must-have addition for your home or a foolproof gift for a friend.
Creating it was a 4-step process:
Glass Selection: A square of intense red and orange streaky glass was cut for the center of the bowl, and strips of iridescent, textured clear glass were cut for the border. In addition, a square piece of clear glass was cut to the size of the finished piece.
Design Assembly: The red/orange streaky glass placed in the center of the clear glass square, and the borders were fitted around it. A sprinkling of dichroic glass frit was applied to the dish to add interest. The assembly was held in place by with a bit of glue in preparation for transferring it to the kiln.
Fusing in the Kiln: The assembly was placed in a kiln and heated to 1475 degrees, the temperature at which glass melts and the layers fused together.
Shaping the Dish: To create the dish shape, it went back into the kiln one last time on top of a mold. It was heated to 1250 degrees. At this temperature the glass softened and gravity caused it to sink down onto the mold and assume its final shape.
