Very Iridescent Purple Art Glass Dish 4.5″

This bowl is part of our Serendipity Collection of art glass home decor. It is 4.5″ x 4.5″.

Creating it was a 5-step process. First, two circles of glass were cut to the dimensions of the finished piece, one transparent, dark purple and the other clear glass with an iridescent pattern on it. The The pieces were stacked with the purple glass on the bottom and the clear glass over it, with the iridescent coating facing up. The glass was then placed in a kiln and fired to 1475 degrees, the temperature at which glass melts and the two layers fuse together. In this case it was held at the top temperature a little longer than is standard, and the result is a dish has thas more texture to the surface than we usually see. It also supercharged the iridescent colors. After cooling, the edge of the glass was ground to remove irregularities. Lastly, the glass was placed back in the kiln, on top of a mold, and heated to 1250 degrees. This is the temperature at which glass softens and gravity causes it to sink into the mold and assume its final shape.
