Breed Symbol Bowl – Turquoise & Cranberry Art Glass 5″

$79.00

This bowl is part of our Breed Symbol Collection of equestrian art glass home decor. It is 4″ in diameter. Included are the symbols of the Oldenburg, Hanoverian, Dutch Warmblood, Danish Warmblood, Westphalen, and Trakehner breeds.

We hope you enjoy this one-of-a-kind, art glass piece that honors the equine athletes many of us call our partners. You can simply admire it in the plate stand we include with it, or give it a job. Use it to hold jewelry, change, or keys. Place a small candle or decorative soap in it. Use it to serve dips and small food items. Whatever you decide, it will be a beautiful complement in your home or an appreciated gift for anyone who enjoys fine things.

Creating the dish was a 6-step process.
Glass Selection:First two circles of glass were cut to the dimensions of the finished piece, one clear and the other sky blue.
Creating the Design: The breed symbol pattern was created using a process called “powder printing”. Finely ground opaque cranberry glass (known as powder frit) was sifted onto the blue glass using a stencil designed in-house and created on our laser cutter.

After lifting the stencil and removing stray glass powder, this circle was placed on top of the clear glass one.
Fusing in the Kiln: The two layers were placed in an electric kiln and heated to 1475ºF, the temperature at which glass melts and the layers fuse together.
Refining the Edges: After fusing, the edge of the piece was ground to eliminate irregularities and it was fired again, this time to 1425ºF, just hot enough to melt the edge and “fire polish” the rim.
Shaping the Dish: At this point the piece was still flat. To turn it into a bowl required one more firing. It went back in the kiln for the last time, on top of a mold, and heated to 1250ºF. At this temperature the glass softened and gravity caused it to sink into the mold and assume its final shape.
