I hope you enjoy this versatile, one-of-a-kind, art glass piece. Use it to hold jewelry, change, or keys. Put a small candle or decorative soap in it. Use it to serve dips and small food items. Or put it on a stand and simply enjoy the play of colors. It makes a lovely gift for any occasion.
Creating it was a 5-step process.
Glass Selection: First, two squares of glass were cut to the size of the finished dish and stacked with clear glass over iridized black.
Creating the Design: The clear glass was decorated with a horse, hand painted in metallic gold paint.
Fusing in the Kiln: The two layers were placed in a kiln and heated to 1475 degrees, the temperature at which glass melts and the pieces fused together.
Refining the Edges: After cooling, the edges were ground smooth to remove irregularities.
Shaping the Dish: One more firing was required to transform it into a bowl. To do this the flat, fused glass square was placed in the kiln on top of a mold and was heated to 1250 degrees. At this temperature the glass softened and gravity caused it to sink into the mold and assume its final shape.
