Green Counterpane Glass Dish with Iridescent Blue Mosaic Horse 14″

Creating it was a 6-step process.
Creating the Background: A circle of clear glass the size of the finished piece was cut. On top of the circle, clear glass squares of various sizes were arranged and glued to hold them in place. A small space was intentionally left around the squares which were later filled with ground glass (frit) in different shades of green .
Fusing the Background: The assemblage was carefully placed in a kiln and heated to 1475 degrees, the temperature at which glass melts and the pieces and layers fused together.
Creating the Horse: An outline of the horse was drawn onto the background glass. A piece of iridescent sea blue glass was cut into small squares that were carefully arranged and glued in place within the outline.
Fusing the Horse: The piece was fired again, this time to a temperature of 1350 degrees, which is known as a “tack fuse”. At this temperature the glass melts enough for pieces to stick together but not enough for them to completely lose their shape.
Shaping the Bowl: At this point the piece was still flat. One more firing was required to transform it into a dish. To do this, the flat fused glass circle was placed in the kiln on top of a mold and heated to 1250 degrees. At this temperature the glass softened and gravity caused the square to sink into the mold and assume its final shape.
