Jockey Caps Bowl On Iridescent Glass 5 In

This playful bowl is part of our Painted Work Collection of equestrian home decor. It is 5.25″ in diameter.

Creating it was a 4-step process. First, the jockey caps were hand painted on a circle of transparent, iridized khaki glass using special enamel paint. After the paint dried, the circle was placed on top of an equal size circle of opaline glass — a unique glass that starts out clear and turns a lovely blue-white, semi-opaque color after exposure to high heat. The two layers were placed a kiln and heated to 1475 degrees, the temperature at which glass melts, the layers fuse together, and the paint matures to its deepest colors. After fusing, the edge of the piece was ground to eliminate irregularities. Finally, the fused piece was put back in the kiln on top of a mold and heated to 1250 degrees. At this temperature the glass softens and gravity causes it to sink into the mold and assume its final shape.
