Creating it was a 6-step process.
Glass Selection: First, two squares of glass were cut to the size of the finished dish and stacked, with clear glass on top of orange.
Creating the Design:
The pebbles were made in advance by heating small pieces of pink dichroic glass in a kiln to 1475 degrees, the temperature at which they melted and their sharp edges become rounded. The pebbles were arranged on top of the stacked clear and orange glass.
Fusing in the Kiln: The assemblage was then carefully placed in the kiln and heated to 1475 degrees, at which point the orange and clear glass fused together and the pebbles melted and sank down, almost flush with the surface.
Refining the Edges: After cooling, the edges were ground to eliminate irregularities.
Shaping the Dish: One more firing was required to transform it into a dish. To do this the flat, fused glass square was placed in the kiln on top of a mold and heated to 1250 degrees. At this temperature the glass softened and gravity caused the square to sink into the mold and assume its final shape.
