Both pretty and versatile, it is a perfect gift for anyone who appreciates the quality of hand made things, either by itself or as a set of two or more.
Creating it was a 5-step process.
Glass Selection: First, two squares of glass were cut to the size of the finished dish and stacked, with a piece turquoise glass on top of a piece of clear.
Creating the Design: A sprinkling of yellow and clear frit (bits of gravel sized glass) was applied on top of the turquoise.
Fusing in the Kiln: The assemblage then went into a kiln and was heated to 1425 degrees, at which point the two layers and the frit began to melt and fuse together, while retaining the texture of the frit.
Refining the Edges: After cooling, the edges were ground to eliminate irregularities.
Shaping the Dish: One more firing was required to transform it into a dish. To do this the flat, fused glass square was placed in the kiln on top of a mold and heated to 1250 degrees. At this temperature the glass softens and gravity caused the square to sink into the mold and assume its final shape.
